The big bright line between web and TV gets blurrier by the day…

From today’s New York Times, “Eisner’s Studio and AOL Pair Up for Web Series:”

In a deal to be announced Wednesday, Michael D. Eisner‘s Web studio, Vuguru, will produce half a dozen scripted Web video series for AOL.

The partnership is the latest attempt by AOL, which has been struggling, to infuse its home page and its Web sites with original video. “We feel like we are building the future of great high-quality video content,” said Tim Armstrong, the chief executive of AOL.

Cable Television as the Seer Stone of the Media Business

…or, to put it another way, “If you were going to build this system from the ground-up, would it look anything like the way it looks now?”

The Atlantic.com’s Business Channel weighs in with this column about cable companies, broadcast television and revenue.   The conclusion:

But the Web will likely transform this debate for TV as well. Technology appears to be increasingly moving towards a sort of content-agnostic world, where the web will be where we access all forms of media, whether print, radio or TV. So while it’s fine for us to quibble over this latest trend for non-cable TV networks, I suspect it’s just one step in an evolution leading to a new world where all of our media consumption will be very, very different.

cable television made redundant

Good article in The New York Times — more interestingly, it has been in the most popular stories section for a few days now.

This quest for cable freedom has been a couple of years in the works. Before I called the cable company to bid my farewell I imagined that I would need a vast array of devices to fill the entertainment void: a device for games, something for television shows, a contraption for streaming movies through Netflix and, finally, something to control all of the above. But it turns out a computer can do all those tasks with some software upgrades and a wireless keyboard and mouse.

More about TV and web blending into one…

Interesting interview on NPR’s Morning Edition this morning — covers where the phenomenon is now and what stands in the way.   Better to be a little media guy than a big one right now.   It all goes back to the classic business school question:  If you were going to build a system from the ground up, would it look like what we have now?   Doubtful.

Television and Web blending into one…

Just a question of when.

PBS is making lots of video content available online.  Here’s an interesting article in the NY Times today about The News Hour revamping its production model with a web focus.
